The book weaves together stories of people connected to Steller’s sea cow and its extinction, though only indirectly. The focus is on their personal fates, though only indirect. It also explores other species driven to extinction.
Whether through egg collecting (which I personally have never heard of before) or hunting for fur and meat. Apart from a slow start, it’s a very engaging read. The end of the book felt a bit rushed, though.
